There are two main versions of petrol-driven splitters on the market. Vertical and horizontal, the difference is only in the dimensions. A horizontal log splitter is recommended for personal and occasional use, as it takes up much less space than a vertical one, obviously the smaller the model, the more the power drops, but for occasional use the power required is not excessive. On the contrary, vertical log splitters are suitable for professional use, as they are more cumbersome to transport and have quite important powers. Some models require more people to be moved. The log splitter is equipped with two feeding systems, one that feeds the wedge that exerts pressure on the piece of wood to be cut, the second feeds the wedge feeding system itself. In the most common models, the wedge is powered by a hydraulic or oleodynamic system, the fluid in the circuit is pushed by an oil pump, which of course is in turn powered by a petrol engine with variable power, normally from 6 to 8 HP.
Differences with the electric motor
As for lawn mowers, brush cutters and other similar tools, also the log splitters have different feeding, with heat engine, or with electric motor. The question that arises is always the same, which of the two engines is better? Even here the answers are more or less the same, an electric motor can be more advantageous, as it is more silent, almost no maintenance, and definitely cheaper, but obviously the aggravating circumstance that is still dominated by electricity. So we have to think about where we are going to chop wood, the heat engine has the advantage of being transported practically everywhere, as well as having much higher powers. One log splitter with petrol engine from 6-8 HP, it can easily reach a pressing force of over 8 tons. Moreover it needs more maintenance, but it is absolutely nothing alarming, the type of engine is structured very similar to that of a common chainsaw, therefore also the maintenance is quite similar.
Purchase cost for wood splitter
Once you have chosen the most suitable type for us, you must of course think about which model to orient ourselves. We must think that the log splitter unlike other instruments, is subject to many stresses, consequently continuous wear. Taking this into account, particular attention must be paid to the structure of the frame, it must be very solid given that it is the component most subject to stress during the manufacturing process. The cost of a petrol log splitter varies according to the power of the engine, and also to the thrust power of the cutting system. The most economical are the vertical "fixed" log splitters, that is not equipped with wheels, and therefore not transportable, these have reduced power, usually around 7-8 tons and about 7 HP of power. The figure for a good model is around 800Ђ. Going up in power, the amount to be spent also rises, a model of about 10 tons also reaches 1300Ђ. Carefully evaluate the one best suited to your needs.
Petrol splitter: Special models
There are special models of wood splitters on the market. Despite being powered by an internal combustion engine, they are not considered to be real petrol splitters. This is because the hydraulic pump is not powered by an engine placed directly on the structure, but by an external motor. For example, that of a tractor. These models are obviously suitable for a purely industrial use, or in any case if they split large quantities of wood, in addition to their not so cheap cost they are equipped with quite considerable powers. One of the smallest models, if you can call it that, can have a pressing force of up to 20 tons thanks to the shaft drive connected directly to the tractor engine. These models can also be transported in extreme comfort as they are connected directly to the rear of the tractor, like a normal tool of the latter, but they have the disadvantage as already mentioned before they are not particularly cheap, a 20-ton model is close to 1400Ђ.
