Hi, I wanted to ask about bonsai; I have an elm, it is advisable to keep it outside or inside ... I live in Sicily the temperature varies in winter 11 15 in summer 25 33
often also called elm trees are the bonsai of zelkova serrata, or Japanese elm, which fears a little more cold compared to a European elm, but since you live in Sicily, surely your bonsai will be able to stay outdoors all year round , even if it were a zelkova; elms are deciduous plants, which during the cold months and with short days are completely without leaves, so they do not need great care in winter, even if it is advisable to avoid leaving the soil completely dry for long months; then water with great regularity from March to October, and for the remaining months water only sporadically. Plants can stay in the garden throughout the year and if possible it would be advisable to place them below a deciduous tree, which will protect them from the full sun with its leaves in spring and summer, and instead leave it away free in the sun in autumn and winter. The elms love well-lit positions, but the summer heat is detrimental to bonsai, because the little land that encloses the roots in the small pots can be dried up even within a few hours; for this reason, semi-shaded positions are preferred, or where the plant receives direct sunlight only in the early hours of the morning. Especially in Sicily, where the summer climate is torrid, water your bonsai very often, so that the soil remains fresh and moist, but also avoids water stagnation, which can favor the development of root rot. The repottings are carried out at the end of winter, before the vegetative awakening, when one intervenes also with small pruning to contain and redesign the crown, which can be repeated in autumn; the most important formation prunings are practiced instead in winter, when the plant has already lost all the leaves.
